Sukhasana simply means easy or happy pose. The legs cross at the shins, the spine is long, and there is no struggle. Many students need a folded blanket under the hips so the knees can drop.
Use it whenever you sit for breathwork. Switch the cross of the legs halfway through so both hips get equal time.
How to practise
- Sit on the floor, preferably on a folded blanket so the hips are higher than the knees.
- Cross the shins and tuck each foot under the opposite knee.
- Rest the hands on the knees or in the lap. Roll the shoulders back.
- Lengthen the spine. Soften the face. Breathe through the nose.
- Change the cross of the legs after a few minutes.
Sit for 3–10 minutes, changing the leg cross halfway.
Benefits
- Gently opens the hips and groins
- Encourages an upright, relaxed spine
- Prepares the mind for pranayama and meditation
- Reduces restlessness in beginners
Precautions
If the knees sit high or hurt, sit on a higher support or stretch the legs forward (Dandasana). Avoid forcing the knees down.
