Vrikshasana, the Tree Pose, teaches you to find stillness on an uneven foundation. The standing foot roots down; the lifted knee opens; the spine grows upward. When the body wobbles, the breath is what brings you back.

It is excellent for students, office workers and anyone who wants a clearer, more focused mind.

How to practise

  1. Begin in Tadasana. Shift the weight onto the left foot.
  2. Place the sole of the right foot on the inner left thigh, calf or ankle — never on the knee.
  3. Press foot into thigh and thigh into foot. Square the hips forward.
  4. Bring the palms together at the heart, or raise the arms overhead like branches.
  5. Fix a steady gaze (drishti) on a point in front. Switch sides.

Hold 20–40 seconds on each side. Build up to 1 minute as balance improves.

Benefits

  • Improves balance and proprioception
  • Strengthens thighs, calves, ankles and feet
  • Opens the hips and groins
  • Builds concentration and calms anxiety

Precautions

Skip or use a wall if you have ankle injury, severe vertigo or recently had knee surgery. Keep the foot off the knee joint.
